History of the Birth of the first sugar cube in the city of Dacice.
The new sugar refinery in Dacice, South Moravia started production in 1833 Sugar was made both from sugar beet and sugar cane Jakub Krystof Rad, who cam to Dacice with his wife Juliana in 1839 directed the sugar refinery. Juliana was a smart lady. As the wife of the owner of a confectionary and chocolate manufactory, she led a rich social life. Once, while serving tea and chopping sugar cone, she injured her finger. And idea struck her: sugar cones are not suitable for tea serving.
Juliana suggested her husband to try to produce sugar in small cubes which might be more practical in the household. Mr Rad felt very sorry for his injured wife and started to think about possible production of sugar in small pieces. He was succesful. On 23nd January 1843 he obtained the privilege from the Imperial Court Cabinet of the Austrian Empire in Vienna to produce sugar cubes on a press of his own construction. Mr and Mrs Rad left Dacice shortly after and the sugar refinery was closed. Sugar cubes were produced differently and somewhere else. Only a small memorial in Dacice square reminds us that it was here where the first sugar cube was produced.
